Choosing the perfect location for your engagement session can completely set the tone for your photos. Whether you’re dreaming of sweeping nature views, romantic gardens, or modern urban vibes, the Johnstown area offers an incredible variety of backdrops.
Johnstown Flood National Memorial
The Johnstown Flood National Memorial is not only a great place to learn about the history and events of our area, but a beautiful landscape for anyone looking for a more outdoorsy feel to their photos.
One of my favorite locations because of how versatile and easily accessible all the photo spots are! Wether your looking for photos in an open field, down by the creek, mountain views, or beautiful sunset light, this spot has it all. It’s especially stunning in spring and fall, when the greenery or fall foliage adds warmth and depth to photos. Typically, their arent many visitors at one time, leaving it a nice private location as well.
Why I love it:
• Wide open spaces
• Natural textures + history
• Gorgeous golden hour light
2. Quemahoning Dam
The Quemahoning Dam is amazing for its water access and multiple locations around the dam. Whether you want photos in the woods, on the beach at sunset, or on its scenic roads. It also allows for multiple locations to be used very easily. This location can also be used throughout any season of the year wether you want spring, summer, fall, or even winter portraits.
This location works beautifully for couples who love the outdoors or want engagement photos that feel epic and unique. Wether you want to hike on its many hiking trails, spend the day at the beach near the recreational area, or even use the water for photos.

• Adventurous, outdoorsy couples
3. Downtown/Parking Garage(s)
If your style leans more modern, editorial, or urban, downtown Johnstown is a hidden gem.
Parking garages offer great views of the city and the surrounding valley, while nearby streets add brick textures, city vibes, and movement. This is a great option for couples who want photos that feel fun, stylish, and a little different from traditional nature settings.
Perfect for:
• Chic, modern aesthetics
• Fun movement based poses
• Urban + sunset skyline shots
4. Yellow Creek State Park
Yellow Creek State Park is ideal if you want variety in one location. While it is about 35-40 minutes from Johnstown, it is still a great local location if you plan ahead.
From its awesome beach area and wooded trails to open fields and soft light filtering through trees, this park offers a little bit of everything. It’s especially beautiful in late spring, summer, and early fall, and works great for couples who want a relaxed, natural feel.
Why couples love it:
• Water + woods in one spot
• Peaceful and scenic
• Great for walking and candid moments
5. Mount Assisi Gardens
This location is pure romance and elegance. Again, this location is about 35 minutes from Johnstown but offers such a unique photo landscape for the area and is free to access. The ideal time to visit is late spring and throughout the summer when the garden is in full bloom.
With manicured gardens, stone walkways, and a stunning Victorian atmosphere, Mount Assisi Gardens feels timeless and serene. It’s perfect for couples who want something classic and refined without feeling overly formal.
Ideal for:
• Romantic, soft portraits
• Elegant outfits
• Quiet, intimate sessions
The best engagement photos happen when your location reflects who you are as a couple. Whether that’s hiking to an overlook, strolling through a garden, or laughing together downtown at sunset, the right setting brings your story to life.
If you’re not sure which location fits your vision, I’m always happy to help you choose or even combine two locations for more variety in your gallery.
